Southwick Cultural Council (SCC) finalized plans for its 23rd Fine Art Exhibition and Sale scheduled for April 27-28

April 15, 2024 …. Cultural Council Chair Susan Kochanski announced that the plans are in place for the 23rd annual exhibition and sale to be held at the Southwick Town Hall auditorium, located at 454 College Highway, Rtes. 10 and 202, Southwick.

Chair Kochanski said that “the event will kick-off with a special reception “To Meet the Artists,” on Friday, April 26, at 5:30 pm.”  The viewing and sale of the art will be available and will continue Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.  The show features 40 artists from western Massachusetts and northern Connecticut showcasing art forms in the areas of oil, acrylic, watercolor, wood carving, sculpture, photography, mixed media and more.

Poster art selected for this show is an egg tempera by Joan Nelson of West Springfield, Massachusetts, entitled “End of Season.”  The art will appear on the front cover of Southwood’s Magazine, April edition.

The Southwick Historical Commission will feature various images from the book entitled “New Haven and Northampton Canal Greenway/Bike and Rail Trails following the Historic Canal,” authored by Robert R. Madison.  The canal passed through 16 communities.  The image for Southwick shows four canal locks, and a typical packet boat being towed by mules.  Also, a granite marker showing the Southwick section of the New Haven and Northampton Canal, and its relationship to the Congamond Lakes and the Southwick Rail Trail, will be erected on Congamond Road to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Town in Southwick in 1770, and the upcoming 200th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the canal in 1825.  The design will be on display.

On Saturday, local artist Pauline Thomas will host a workshop on watercolor painting.  Also, a Freedom candle making demonstration will be performed.

Live Musical performances will be held on both days between 12 noon and 3 pm.  On Saturday, award-winning vocalist, flutist, and teaching artist Sarah Clay will lead the StarCats.  Local blues artist Steve Piper and Friends will take the stage on Sunday and share some of their pieces of music.

The show is open to the public and admission is FREE.  Questions regarding the show and sale may be directed to Chair Susan Kochanski at 413 569 0946, or email cultural@southwickma.gov.
