1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Dear Parents/Caregivers:

The Southwick Public Library would like to invite you to participate in this free program which encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before he or she starts kindergarten.

Program Overview

Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (and yes you can repeat them, we all have favorites!) before your little one starts kindergarten.

If you read 1 book a night, you will have read 365 books in a year. That’s 730 books in 2 years and 1,095 in 3 years. If you consider that most children start Kindergarten at around 5 years, you have more time than you think!

Each time your child reaches a milestone we will have a reward (stickers, books, etc.) waiting for them at the Library.

How to Participate

Read to you child. Studies show that reading with your child provides a great opportunity for bonding. Reading together is fun and will create life-long memories.

Keep track of the titles of the books that your read with your child using the Beanstack App OR using our paper log sheets that we have available in the Children's Room.

Check in with us in the Children’s room each time you hit 100 books read.

If a sibling, grandparent, aunt, or uncle reads to your child, that counts, too!

This is a program available to any child Birth up until they begin Kindergarten.

The program is self-paced, so it can take anywhere from a few months to a few years to complete.

To Sign up, stop by the children’s desk at the Southwick Public library or email Molly at mencarnacion@cwmars.org.

You can also sign up through our ReadSquared App by going to our ReadSquared Homepage
