This watch will be lead by John Weeks: Raptors migrate south through our area starting in August and continuing until early December.  Mid-September is when we see the greatest number and variety of hawks and other birds of prey.  On a good day, we can hope to see two species of vultures, bald eagles, ospreys, red-tailed hawks, red-shouldered hawks, broad-winged hawks, Cooper’s and sharp-shinned hawks, northern harriers and American kestrels. The hawk watch will start at 9am. The timing of the raptors’ passage varies from day to day.  Some of them prefer to migrate early in the day, others around mid-day and still others late in the afternoon.  There will likely be other kinds of birds passing through as well, not to mention monarch butterflies and the odd bat.  I will do my best to identify everything we see and explain how to tell the various species apart.
