Report of the Police Department

The men and women of the Southwick Police Department continue to provide the exceptional service that the residents of Southwick have come to expect. I am proud of the officers that serve the Town. Their professionalism, commitment to the community, and dedication to the Southwick Police Department sets them apart from other police departments. They continually strive to be the best in their profession and it shows in the quality of service they provide.

In 2010 the Southwick Police Department started patrolling the six miles of rail trail that was opened for public use. This linear park has created interesting and challenging issues to provide police services to this area. Through the use of bicycles, ATV, and periodically police cruisers we were able to provide a police presence in this park.

The Town’s acceptance of the Local Permitting Process for docks has provided much needed funding to provide marine patrol on the Congamond Lakes. Increased patrol and enforcement was well received by those who live and play on the waters of the Congamond Lakes.

Officer Thomas Krutka and his partner K-9 Officer Jax continue to train and provide exceptional service. Jax’s reputation continues to grow as he helps fight the battle on drugs throughout Western Massachusetts. Jax has proven to be an exceptional addition to our department. This would not be possible without the dedication and professionalism of Officer Krutka to this program.

Three reserve police officers were appointed in 2010 and are in various stages of training. We welcome Greg Priest, Ernest Malone, and Katherine Lopez as the newest members of our reserve police force. All of them bring unique experience and training that will be an asset to our department. I would like to thank all our Reserve Police Officers for their dedication and support. Without out them it would be difficult to accomplish our goals and objectives.

The Emergency Telecommunications Dispatchers (ETD) once again proved to be true professionals. The ETD’s handle the radios for all Town departments, greet the public, answer ten (10) telephone lines, operate several computer systems, answer 911 calls for Southwick, and are the backup answering point for Southampton 911 calls. These men and women handle all these tasks on their own. To be an ETD takes a person with special talents. It is a demanding position. Their professional service is greatly appreciated.

Stephanie Everett resigned as a part-time ETD so she could take full time employment as a dispatcher for the Amherst Police Department. We wish her well in accepting this challenging position.

I would like to commend all the police officers, reserve police officers, administrative staff, and emergency telecommunications dispatchers. These men and women have displayed the highest standards of professionalism throughout the year. They are willing to take on new challenges. They are dedicated to our mission. I cannot thank them enough for a job well done.

The police department appreciates the support and recognition it receives from the citizens of Southwick, the Board of Selectmen, and the Finance Committee. We ask for your continued support; without it we cannot make Southwick a safe and desirable place to work and live. I thank you, the residents of Southwick, for your support throughout the year.
