Report of the Park & Recreation Commission 2008

The Southwick Park and Recreation Commission experienced a very successful year. The Park and Recreation Commissioners have worked hard to provide the residents of Southwick with numerous organized events throughout the year.

Park & Rec organized a successful trip to Foxwoods during the month of January. The trip was well received and there were several lucky winners.

In April, Park & Rec hosted a very energetic and fun-filled Easter party, which the Easter Bunny attended. Refreshments were served and there were a large number of residents in attendance.

A kayak demonstration, sponsored by Wilderness Experience was held at the town beach in May. The water could have been a little warmer but everyone had a great time regardless.

The Rails to Trails project had an official groundbreaking ceremony on May 12th. The Park and Rec Commissioners took a vote in October in regards to naming the trail and the official name will be “The Jog”. The project is well on its way to completion and residents have already been enjoying the trail. Residents of Southwick can look forward to years of use and enjoyment from the Rails to Trails project.

The town beach opened near the end of June and was open 7 days a week. Dollar Day was sponsored by Park & Rec every Tuesday this summer and was well received. The season was sun and fun-filled and residents thoroughly enjoyed the beach.

The fireworks display was held on July 12th with a record turnout of attendees. Vendors offered crafts, merchandise and refreshments. Children enjoyed pony rides and bounce houses while DJ Kris played great music for all ages. The fireworks were by far the best in the area once again.

During the DARE day event children were finger printed for safety identification. We thank Officers Ken Sanders and Rich Cross for doing the cooking. Family Farm Insurance and the Southwick Police Dept. sponsored the event.

The senior “sizzler” took place on July 30th with Office Ken Sanders ready at the grill. The event was well attended and DJ Kris was once again spinning great music for all. Bingo was played and prizes were won, it was a great time!

The annual Halloween Party took place on October 25th and was well attended. Over 100 children dressed in their scariest and funniest costumes. The weather finally complimented us and hayrides were going non-stop for hours. Once again children were decorating pumpkins, watching movies and enjoying Halloween treats.

In December, a trip to New York City was offered and well received. Everyone enjoyed the day by either shopping, watching a play or just site seeing. The trip was successful and other such trips are being planned for the future.

The annual Children’s Christmas party was held on December 13th. Over 100 children came to see Santa and have their picture taken. The kids were treated to crafts, movies, and a gift from Santa while enjoying some delicious refreshments.

The Park and Recreation Commission are dedicated to working with the town’s residents to assist them with utilizing the town’s resources for their enjoyment. We thank everyone who has supported us in the past and we look forward to another successful year. Suggestions are always welcome.
