Report of the Park & Recreation Commission

The Southwick Park and Recreation Commission experienced a very successful year. The Park and Recreation Commissioners have worked hard to provide the residents of Southwick with numerous organized events throughout the year.

In April, Park & Rec hosted a very energetic and fun-filled Easter party, which the Easter Bunny attended. Refreshments were served and there was a large number of residents in attendance.

Again, the Rails to Trails project was a big part of our 2010 year. The Rails for Trails, Phase 1, was officially opened in May of 2010. There was a grand ceremony with local officials, state officials and citizens alike in attendance. The Rails to Trails officially crossed state lines via Southwick into Suffield and it was a historical event in the making. Official counts were conducted throughout the summer and fall seasons. There are recorded days where there were well over 500 people on the trail. This trail is an amazing success and a great addition to Southwick.

The town beach opened July 1, 2010. The season was sun and fun-filled and residents thoroughly enjoyed the beach.

The fireworks display was held in July combined with Southwick Days. The fireworks were by far the best in the area once again.

The senior “sizzler” took place in August with Kelly Magni, Sue Grabowski and Tracy Cesan cooking for the seniors. The event was well attended and D.J. Chris, from Simply Music was once again spinning great music for all.  Bingo was played and prizes were won, it was a great time!

The annual Halloween Party took place in October and had a record attendance. Over 300 children dressed in their scariest and funniest costumes. This year we had a wonderful addition to our entertainment, sponsored by the Cultural Council; the Good Witch was at the party telling stories for hours to the children in attendance. Once again children were also decorating pumpkins, creating crafts and enjoying Halloween treats.

The annual Children’s Christmas party was held in December. Over 100 children came to see Santa and have their picture taken. The kids were treated to crafts, story time, and a gift from Santa while enjoying some delicious refreshments.

The Park and Recreation Commission is dedicated to working with the town’s residents to assist them with utilizing the town’s resources for their enjoyment. We thank everyone who has supported us in the past and we look forward to another successful year. Suggestions are always welcome.
