Report of the Economic Development Committee 2008

The Economic Development Committee consists of eight volunteer members who meet on a monthly basis to discuss topics of interest or concern to local businesses.

During 2008, the Committee discussed the benefits of extending the Town’s sewer collection system to the northern corridor of College Highway from Coes Hill Road to the Westfield town line. The Committee feels that providing sewer service to this corridor will encourage future economic development and address existing septic systems that have failed. A letter was sent to the Board of Selectmen urging them to include this area in the Phase II Sewer Project.

The Committee purchased a new “Welcome to Southwick” sign, which will replace the existing sign at the Westfield town line. The new sign is expected to be installed in early 2009.

For 2009, the Committee will continue to provide support to the local business community, including sponsoring a “Meet and Greet” with local business owners to discuss the College Highway Reconstruction Project, proposed revisions to the Town’s sign bylaw, and other items.

In light of the current economic conditions, the Committee urges all residents to support and patronize our local businesses. The Committee meets regularly on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM in Conference Room #1 in Town Hall. More information can be found at www.southwickinfo.com.
