Report of the Animal Control Officer

ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER

Another year has come and gone and we again want to thank one and all for all the things they have done with and for the Animal Shelter. We have gotten the cats into the cat building and continue to work on that to make it a wonderful home for the kitties. The dog building has received new paint on the inside; we’ve sealed the floors and painted the walls and floors. We have added new shelves and wonderful covers for the drain that runs the length of the kennel. These things couldn’t be possible without the help of the maintenance department and the donations given to the shelter.

This year we have had over 450 calls. There were many bear calls this year as the bears are being pushed out of their areas by building. The majority of the pets were returned to their owners. We have had a huge kitten season and were able to adopt all of the cats out by the end of the year. Along with the Clerks office there were over 875 dogs licensed in town and we expect more in the year to come with the building here in town.

We held a Meet the Animals at the Southwick Tractor Supply and were able to meet many nice people. We also adopted over 75 cats this year and approximately 30 dogs. We worked with breed rescues to get some of the hard to place dogs into foster homes or adopted out. We had another rabies clinic in March and the fire department and the shelter again were the beneficiaries of the proceeds. We will strive to have them once a year and hopefully be able to add a microchip clinic to one at some point.

We continue to work to get all the animals safe within their home environments. Our staff has shrunk with a couple of our people moving on to follow their careers in different fields. We wish them the best of luck.

We will continue to provide a safe haven for the animals that are lost or are in need of new homes. The animals as always will be vaccinated, tested and spayed and neutered before the final adoptions are done.

Thank you everyone for all that you have done for the Southwick Animal Shelter and for Animal Control.
