Transfer Station Regulations

General Rules and Regulations

This Transfer Station is for Southwick residents only. No commercial or industrial waste. Refuse shall not exceed 3 feet in size. Loose materials (sawdust, Styrofoam peanuts, loose trash, etc.) must be bagged and secured for transport. Attendants may inspect bags, containers, or suspect loads to check contents. Furniture must be broken down and all metal removed. All children under the age of 14 are required to remain in the vehicle at all times. People are encouraged to bring refuse 10 minutes before closing time to allow employees ample time to properly close the facility. No vehicles larger than a one (1) ton pick-up truck allowed inside the Transfer Station Facility. Absolutely NO picking through refuse.

Stickers shall be adhered to the lower inside corner of the driver’s side of the windshield and easily read from the outside.

Recycling

Recycle Smart Guide

Recycling is also mandatory for the following items:
  • Scrap metal (free of rubber, plastic, wood, etc.)
  • Bulky Ridgid Plastics
  • Wood/ Lumber
The following items may be donated for re-use:
  • Clothing (benefiting the Salvation Army)
  • Eyeglasses and Cell Phones (benefiting the Southwick Lions Club)
  • Returnable Bottles and Cans (benefiting the Southwick Lions Club)
  • Books (benefiting Read, Reuse, Recycle)
Recycling bins available free of charge. Request one from a Transfer Station attendant.
 
Bulky Waste

The following bulky waste items may be disposed of with the purchase of a separate permit from the Town Clerk’s office:

  • TV Sets and Computers- $20.00 each
  • Refrigerators*, Freezers*, and Air Conditioners(*Doors must be removed)- $10.00 each
  • Large Appliances (Washers, Dryers, Stoves)- $20.00 each
  • Box Spring or Mattress- $25.00 each
  • Propane Tanks- $5.00 each
  • Car Tires (Dismounted)- $10.00 each
  • Fire Extinguishers- $8.00 each

PLEASE NOTE: All large item permits are only valid for 3 business days after purchase. 

Special Waste

The following items are accepted for disposal at no additional cost: (Assistance from a Transfer Station attendant is required)

  • Small electronic appliances (Printers, cd/dvd players, scanners, keyboards, fax machines, toasters, microwaves, coffee makers, phones, radios, hair dryers, sewing machines, fans, paper shredders, speakers, stereos, vacuum cleaners, etc.)
  • Automotive Oils and Antifreeze
  • Light Bulbs and Ballasts
  • Batteries
  • Mercury Containing Devices
Prohibited Dumping

The following items are prohibited:

  • Commercial and Industrial Waste
  • Hazardous Materials (Flammable liquids, poisonous chemicals, medical waste, etc.)
  • Demolition Waste (Wood pieces longer than 8 feet, sheetrock, siding, shingles, toilets, ceramic or porcelain sinks, asphalt, etc.)
  • Paint (All types)
Brush, Composting and Organic Waste
Brush, grass clippings, leaves, and woodchips may be disposed of in the designated areas. No construction lumber, stumps, rocks, roots, thorned bushes, poison ivy, poison sumac, vines or ash/cinders allowed. Brush must be smaller than 6 inch diameter. These items must be kept free of trash and plastic bags.
 
Compost and wood chips available for pick-up by residents at no additional cost.
