The Southwick Sewer Implementation Committee was established in 1991 for the purpose of overseeing the design and implementation of a Sanitary Sewer System in Southwick, MA. The system was tied into the Westfield Wastewater Treatment Plant in 2003.
Phase II is currently under study and it is hoped construction will begin in 2009. The proposed areas to be sewered next include around the north and west sides of North Pond and nearby areas down to Lakewood Village, Powdermill Rd., Fernwood, Birchwood, Pineywood areas, the school campus, and portions of Feeding Hills Rd, Hudson Drive and Gargon Terrace. Congamond Rd. and the area of College Hwy. nearby are also under consideration (i.e. Gillette Corner and Big Y/Ocean State). Final determination of which areas to include will be, hopefully, made in 2008. It is expected that the project will take between 3 and 5 years to finish.
Public hearings will be held to gather feedback and inform residents. Newspaper articles will help keep residents informed. Periodic updates on the Southwick town website will also be posted. A special town meeting will be held to vote on funding of the sewer system. Although some town funds will be required to accomplish the project, most costs will be borne by the users. State low interest loans and Federal grant money will be sought to help lower the cost.
The committee meets at 7:00 PM on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, with occasional dates when needed, in Conference Room 1 on the first floor of the Town.
