Fees: Cost of Plot $400.00
The Cemetery Department personnel consist of three Cemetery Commissioners, a part time Sexton, a part time Secretary, and part time Groundskeepers.
The Cemetery Commissioners set policy, approve all bills, and oversee the general running of the Cemetery. The Sexton has the responsibility for the day to day operation of the Cemetery, which includes overseeing the Groundskeepers. The Groundskeepers do light maintenance and general repairs on the mowers and trimmers as well as doing the mowing, trimming and other general groundskeeping duties. Our Groundskeepers believe that it is their job to keep the Cemetery looking it’s best so that anyone who stops to visit a loved one will be able to find some peace and beauty during their visit. That is a belief shared by the Commissioners as well as the Sexton, and they always welcome any comments or suggestion from the public. The Secretary takes the minutes as well as keeping records and doing general office duties.
Southwick Cemetery is a Town owned cemetery and lots are sold to Town Residents only. The Cemetery is divided into two parts, the Old Cemetery, which dates back to 1770, and the New Cemetery. The only burials allowed in the Old Cemetery are cremations. The New Cemetery still has some room for growth. The Cemetery is closed for burials during the winter months, but does have a winter vault.
Any Town Resident who would like to purchase a lot should contact one of the Commissioners through the Town Clerk’s Office. Any questions or concerns about the Cemetery should be directed to the Sexton, who can also be reached through the Town Clerk’s Office or via E-mail to the Secretary.
